Owl Pellets
Ages: Families
Date: February 6, 2010
Time: 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Cost: $8 adults, $6 children, which includes Museum admission
Location: Sloan Museum

Made of the fur and bones of an owl’s prey, owl pellets are a fascinating way to explore an owl’s food web as well as practice classification skills while sorting and identifying the bones you find.

Valentine Tea
Ages: 5 and older
Date: February 13, 2010

Cost: $8 adult, $6 child, which includes Museum admission (both child and adult need to register and pay for this activity)
Location: Sloan Museum
What could be more “romantic” than a Victorian Valentine tea? Come join us for an afternoon reception at Sloan Museum. Enjoy some simple refreshments while learning about Victorian etiquette and pastimes. Relax and have fun as you decorate a parasol and play some old fashioned games.

Snowshoeing

Location: Ligon Nature Center
Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt as you snowshoe your way across one of Ligon’s trails. How hard is it for animals to survive in the winter months? See how good you are at it as you try to find acorns, leaves, and a variety of objects. Snowshoes would be provided at Ligon.

Join Sloan Museum and the Grand Blanc Living History Society for an interactive introduction to presidential history! You’ll see a brief presidential presentation and then meet a select group of presidents and first ladies. You might even get a campaign button!

Michigan Birds of Prey

LIVE ANIMALS Join us for this up close look at Michigan’s birds of prey. Explore predator / prey relationships as well as conservation and rehabilitation efforts for these magnificent predators. This presentation may include a screech owl, a great horned owl, a kestrel falcon and a red tailed hawk.

Prehistoric Predators

Nocturnal Predators

When the sun disappears and darkness falls, many creatures get to work. Learn about the special adaptations of animals that are awake at night. Michigan is home to frogs, snakes, crickets, bats, owls and even wolves that hunt at night. Join a Naturalist from For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum to learn how the food hunt changes at night.

Carnivore Connection – A Look at Predators

Ever worry about changing a tire on your car? How about an oil change? Wonder if you were overcharged for that brake job last month? This new program (just for women) will teach you the basics of car care and outline standard maintenance. You’ll also have a chance to tour the historic Buick Gallery!

Shadows in the Mist

Discover the haunting melodies of the Native American flute. Join Steve Prince as he describes the place of the flute in Native American culture through healing, telling stories, during wedding and funeral stories and courting. Prince will bring his collection of flutes and will fill the gallery with music, while telling of the spirituality that accompanies this instrument.

Air Power

Make it move with air! Send a balloon rocket across the room and launch a film canister rocket. Construct and race a cardstock skimmer in our Skimmer Regatta. Add sails, change the surface it races on…can you figure out how to  make yours go the farthest?

Mom and Me Victorian Tea

Kids and their special adult can join us in the courtyard of Sloan Museum for tea, punch and cookies along with crafts and hands-on activities! Decorate a fan, play some old time games and take a look at some of the dolls of Sloan Museum’s collections.
